Deionized (DI) Water

DI water involves removing ionized salts and other charged particles from water. It is commonly used in laboratory settings, electronics manufacturing, and anywhere that mineral deposits can interfere with chemical processes or equipment operation.

deionized

High Purity Water

This is often used in semiconductor and pharmaceutical manufacturing where any trace of impurities can disrupt manufacturing processes or product quality. High-purity water systems might combine multiple stages of filtration, including reverse osmosis (RO), ultraviolet (UV) light sterilization, and final DI to achieve the required purity level.

deionized

De-mineralized Water

Often considered synonymous with deionized water, de-mineralized water has had most of its mineral and salt ions removed. Techniques include ion exchange, carbon filtering, microfiltration, and more, depending on the required purity level. This type of water is used in applications similar to deionized water.

deionized

Lab & Medical Grade

This requires stringent purity standards, as it is used in critical research and medical procedures. Production involves a combination of processes, including filtration, RO, Deionization, and sometimes UV treatments or sub-micron filtering to ensure the removal of virtually all contaminants, including organic compounds, bacteria, and pyrogens.

Providing The Top Service Deionization For Your Industry

Service Deionization, also referred to as “Portable Exchange Deionization”, uses tanks containing
deionization resin plumbed into your process with flexible connectors and exchanged upon
exhaustion by tanks regenerated at a Western Reserve Pure Water Service Center.

Advantages of Service Deionization include:

  • No chemicals or hazardous waste; no frequent OSHA-required hazardous chemical training, no diking or other special containment, no waste treatment.
  • Elimination of maintenance costs. Western Reserve Pure Water exchanges exhausted tanks as required.
  • No capital investment. You pay per tank exchange or per 1000 gallons of demineralized water consumed – your choice.
  • Flexibility to meet varying flow requirements and water quality. Flows from 0.5 gpm to 500 gpm and quality from 50,000 ohm-cm to 18,000,000 ohm-cm.
  • Metals recovery / Waste Treatment – this technology is often used to remove heavy metals from waste streams to meet NPDES or other discharge permit requirements. Tanks are regenerated by a licensed resource recovery facility and the recovered metals sold for recycling.
With over 100 years of combined industry experience, fair prices and a local team of water treatment

Deionization FAQs

Deionization is the process of removing ions from water using ion exchange resins. It produces highly purified water by attracting and removing positively and negatively charged ions, making it useful in industries like electronics and pharmaceuticals.

Deionized water is used for its purity in various industries including laboratories, electronics manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, power generation, automotive battery manufacturing, cosmetics, food processing, medical device sterilization, printing, textiles, and chemical processes.

The longevity of ion exchange resins used in water deionization depends on resin quality, water contaminants, and volume processed. Resins usually last months to years before replacement or regeneration.

Maintaining a DI water system involves regular monitoring of water quality, periodic regeneration or replacement of ion exchange resins, pre-filtration to remove contaminants, system flushing, sanitization to prevent bacterial growth, and regular maintenance checks of system components.

Operating a DI water system involves initial equipment investment, ongoing expenses for consumables like resins and filters, energy costs, water consumption for processes and waste disposal, maintenance and repair expenses, labor costs for personnel, and disposal costs for regeneration waste. Effective cost management and optimizing system performance ensures reliable high-quality water production while minimizing operating expenses.

Service deionization avoids capital investment and uses exchange tanks, with billing per tank exchange or per volume.

Deionized water typically achieves resistivity from 50,000 up to 18 million ohm-cm, suitable for most ultra-pure applications.

Service tanks are chemically regenerated off-site, eliminating on-site hazardous waste handling.

Flow rates range from 0.5 to 500 gpm and quality can be tailored to a facility’s requirements.

Yes, deionization can remove many heavy metal ions and is often used in metals recovery and discharge compliance.

Service exchange eliminates resin maintenance, while installed systems require routine resin replacement and testing.

DI provides higher-purity water when compared with single-stage RO, especially for low-mineral, conductivity-critical applications.
